Roopkund Trek (Skeleton Lake)

Roopkund Trek (Skeleton Lake)

The Roopkund Trek, popularly known as the Skeleton Lake Trek, is one of the most mysterious and adventurous Himalayan treks in India. Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, this trek is famous for its high-altitude glacial lake, Roopkund, which lies at an elevation of 16,499 ft. The lake is surrounded by snow-covered mountains such as Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Chaukhamba, making it a breathtaking sight.

The mystery of Roopkund lies in the human skeletal remains that are visible at the bottom of the lake when the snow melts, earning it the name “Skeleton Lake.” Historians and scientists suggest these skeletons date back to the 9th century, adding an eerie and fascinating charm to the trek.

The trail offers dense oak and rhododendron forests, vast alpine meadows like Bedni Bugyal and Ali Bugyal, and thrilling high-altitude passes with snow and rocky paths. For photographers, adventure seekers, and history enthusiasts, the Roopkund trek is the perfect blend of natural beauty, mythology, and mystery.
